The origin of our Peppermint Leaves Herbal Tea Blend

It's hard to imagine a more refreshing tea than our pure Peppermint Leaves herbal loose-leaf blend. Intensely menthol and cool in the mouth, with a clean, vibrant, garden-fresh minty aroma, this Great Taste Awards winner makes a delicious digestif or enlivening afternoon infusion.

Harvested in the summer, this luxury peppermint tea has evenly cut leaves that, when brewed, create a greenish-yellow infusion with a smooth mouthfeel.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is a hybrid of spearmint (Mentha spicata) and watermint (Mentha aquatica) and grows over the world. Mint tea has been popular as a tisane in the Mediterranean and Middle East for millennia, particularly in North African countries such as Egypt. It is also a popular after dinner drink for its soothing and relaxing qualities.

Naturally caffeine-free, Peppermint Leaves tea is equally uplifting and soothing, so it can be enjoyed at any time of day. Drink it hot to maximise the release of its high menthol content and intense flavour, or cold on a sultry summer's day, when its pristine aroma and minty-sweet taste come to the fore.

What are the health benefits of drinking peppermint tea?

Drinking a cup of peppermint tea makes you feel good. When you have a cold, it can help clear your respiratory tract. When you're tired, the mint leaves zingy menthol qualities can reinvigorate you. For centuries, mint tisanes have been used to help ease digestion after a meal – studies have shown that the natural chemicals in peppermint may help relax the intestinal tract and ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Steeping our dried Peppermint Leaves in hot water helps release those essential oils for maximum effect. Peppermint's muscle-relaxing qualities have also been linked to the relief of headaches and menstrual cramps. And of course, given its widespread use in toothpaste, it will come as no surprise that peppermint has antibacterial properties, so drinking our loose-leaf herbal tea may keep your breath fresher, too (one caveat: if you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn or kidney stones, you may want to avoid peppermint, as it can exacerbate the symptoms).

Alternatives to Peppermint Leaves tea

For those who enjoy the refreshing taste of mint with a bit of a caffeinated kick, our Menthos Gunpowder is an excellent choice, which is an invigorating Chinese green tea infused with peppermint; perfect for both hot and cold days.

If you're looking for more caffeine-free options, a caddy of Whole Chamomile Blossoms, which is rich in floral, apple-like qualities, is both calming and refreshing. Looking for a gift? A caddy of simple but beautifully fragrant Whole Rose Buds makes an elegant package to send to a loved one. Or, for a naturally invigorating pick-me-up that can also aid digestion, try our aromatic Lemongrass & Ginger herbal tea.

Our range of single-serving teaware, including our mesh Tea Egg infusers and beautifully designed Glass Infuser Mug, made of borosilicate glass, makes it easy to brew up a quick herbal infusion throughout the day. For even more convenience, see our fully biodegradable Peppermint Leaves Triune Tea Bags.

Region

Michigan State, USA

Michigan is well-known for its high-quality peppermint cultivation, attributed to its rich, well-drained soil and temperate climate. The state experiences cold winters, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, and warm summers averaging between 22°C and 28°C, which are ideal for peppermint growth. These conditions enable the plant to develop a robust root system during the cooler months, allowing it to flourish in the moderate summer heat and accumulate menthol, which provides the refreshing, cooling sensation characteristic of peppermint.

The region benefits from consistent rainfall, typically ranging between 600mm to 900mm annually, which supports healthy plant growth and enhances oil production. With an elevation ranging from 174m near the Great Lakes to 600m in higher areas, Michigan offers varied conditions, but peppermint cultivation thrives particularly in areas with well-drained, slightly elevated land. Harvesting occurs in late July or early August when the oils in the leaves are at their peak, just before flowering. This timing is crucial to ensure the oils have the highest quality and intensity, making Michigan peppermint an essential component in premium teas, flavourings, and aromatherapy products. The state's favourable agricultural conditions make it a leading producer of peppermint with vibrant aroma and flavour.
